When you're asked to review a track from an artist you don’t know on a compilation with no familiar names and on a label that doesn’t ring a bell, what possible context can you have? After an initial feeling of disorientation, you do what every review should but seldom do: just listen and focus on the music. And the music of Old Friend from Queniv, a total stranger to this reviewer, is simply awesome. It manages to deftly combine two distinct elements that are hard to combine: minimalistic, moody sparsity with eye popping, foot tapping almost funky beat that feels produced more by a human than a drum machine. It is as if a funk drummer walked in on an electronic musician experimenting with soundscapes. Free your mind and your ass will follow!
