September mixes bring us more clubby oriented mixes with of course few exceptions. As usual, we have compiled the list of mixes by international and local DJ's from the festivals and clubs around the world, podcasts and radio shows. Pick the one that you like and enjoy the ride
Cleveland - Planet Cleveland E01, Red Light Radio
Cleveland is one of the artists in which we pay close attention to his work. The super talented artist who has incredible releases on labels like Hivern Discs and ESP Institute, built a name for himself as a DJ with a very wide spectrum of music. We really enjoy listening to his mixes of non-club music. Recently he started ‘Planet Cleveland’, a radio show on Red Light Radio, and judging by the first episode we are set for a treat. Long live ‘ Planet Cleveland’ !
Melon - SoHaSo podcast vol.25
The 25th edition of SoHaSo is courtesy of Melon, a living legend of the Netherlands’ underground music scene. One of Trouw’s residents, he is known for his exceptional knowledge of electronic music and his sets are notorious to spread over 30 years back. This mix is no exception, a truly special journey that will not leave you indifferent for sure.
Aera - Christallization #198
In April this year, we had the honor to host one of the most talented artists from the scene at this moment, Berlin-based Aera. That night he showed us that he’s not just incredibly talented music producer but a fantastic DJ as well. Aera recently paid a visit to one of our favorite radio shows, Kristijan Molnar’s 'Christallization' where he delivered a beautiful, versatile mix that we listened to couple a of times already. Tracks by Oceanic, Davis, Joakim, Nuno Dos Santos, and Aera himself to name a few add up to a pleasurably spent one hour.
Davis - Oddcast 7
Brazil's best export, 'In Their Feelings' label head and mastermind behind infamous ODD parties in Sao Paolo, Davis can do no wrong lately. After a palette of unique and very interesting releases and numerous appearances at festivals and clubs around the world in the last couple of months, Davis has established a name for himself as a prolific producer and DJ with a very unique and versatile style. The latest mix of his is a new edition of Oddcast, and it’s a true journey for every music lover. It unfolds slowly, with beautiful ambient and downtempo tracks up until 50min or so when Davis puts it in a ‘second gear’ and takes a listener to a powerful and intense techno journey.
Lux - Kannmix 18
The latest mix coming from one our favorite labels, Kann from Leipzig is courtesy of Lux, a DJ that has been a staple to Leipzig’s underground techno scene for years. Her style perfectly fits into Kann’s repertoire and we enjoyed listening to this mix, well, a couple of times last month. Break beat, techno, acid…yes please.
Ripperton - Fiction Sunset Boat Cruise Afterparty 08.19.2017
We had the honor to host one of the best producers and DJs in the underground electronic music scene, Ripperton. It was a beautiful summer night in August, and we just finished an unforgettable boat cruise around NYC. Masters of their work, Love Over Entropy and Ripperton took us on an astonishing music journey that fit perfectly with the sunset over the Manhattan skyline. Next stop was Bushwick AV rooftop and a continuation of an already epic night. After warm-up sets by Fiction residents, the one & only – Ripperton took over. He delivered a mind-bending groovy, dark mix that was quite a continuation of his set on the boat. Tracks by Tom Trago, Quarion, Villalobos, and Ripperton himself make this mix really special.
Nuno Dos Santos - Atomnation 011
For the latest Atomnation’s podcast, Nuno Dos Santos, the SoHaSo label boss took us for a little different ride. A ride that we utterly enjoyed. Nuno made this mix strictly in break beat and acid style, and it’s perfect. A few words about the mix from Nuno himself: "With this podcast, I wanted to indulge a bit more in the broken beat side of things. A bit higher tempo and rougher mixes besides some electro stuff that I have been appreciating a lot lately. It includes two tracks by SoHaSo label artists which are yet to be released and some other surprises so no tracklist. I always thought it is really cool to discover things by looking hard and doing research and only after some time find the record you’ve been looking for. Oh that’s the one! Now it’s track id’s everywhere, everything is a bit pre-processed in that sense… Happy searching!"
Jennifer Cardini + Job Jobse - Beats in Space#904
In September we had an opportunity to enjoy mind-bending sets by Jennifer Cardini at Good Room and Job Jobse at Cityfox who played alongside our residents Steve Graham, Gilles Wasserman and Joe Foxton. While in NY both Jennifer and Job paid a mandatory visit to legendary Beats in Space radio show hosted by Tim Sweeney. This b2b mix brought us some very interesting fresh music from labels such as Correspondant, Nous’klaer, Crowdspacer and Dekmantel to name a few.
Patrice Baumel - Essential Mix 09.23.2017
One of the greatest honors as a DJ is to present yourself and your style on the legendary BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. Artists dig deep and always try to deliver something special when visiting Pete Tong’s studio. Recently joining the Essential Mix roster is an artist who’s been around for many years. His original productions and remixes have been played from top-notch DJ’s at festivals and clubs to bluetooth speakers in some camp in the woods. He’s Patrice Baumel, and he earned his spot in the Essential Mix series with hard work and exceptional talent. His mix is energetic and powerful, it covers years of electronic music and has a very enjoyable flow. From haunting vocals by Tracey Thorn and C.A.R to powerful grooves by Dorisburg and Moritz Von Oswald this mix is truly essential.
Fiction NYC Residents - A/V Cast 07
Our residents Joe Foxton, Steve Graham and Gilles Wasserman played an incredible after party marathon 2 months ago at one of the best after party venues in Brooklyn, Bushwick AV. It was a phenomenal party that went till 2pm and last 5-6hrs crowd had opportunity to hear very first B2B2B between Joe, Steve and Gilles. This is a 3hrs recording from their B2B2B set which was published ahead of Cityfox party in September where our residents played alongside artists like Patlac, Job Jobse, Tim Engelhardt, Ruede Hagelstein and Atish. Tour de force Fiction style!
Rodriguez Jr - Pleinvrees Festival 09.02.2017
Master of the melodic deep house, French artist, Rodriguez Jr, doesn’t leave anybody indifferent when watching his live performance. We enjoyed listening to the recording of his set at Pleinvrees Festival in Netherlands in September. It’s melodic house in it’s best.
Mathias Schober - This is us: Lossless
Lossless is a label that we support a lot here on Fiction Lab. The reason is simple, label bosses Mathias Schober and Thomas Herb, pay attention to every little detail when it comes to each release that comes out with a Lossless stamp. This mix is exclusive for Amsterdam’s music platform, Liquid Youth, and it was made by Mathias Schober, an artist who we believe deserves much more recognition for what he has given to electronic music in last 15+ years. The mix was named ‘This is Us: Lossless’ and its purpose is to present what the Lossless label is all about. During the mix Mathias often changes atmosphere and mood, showing that Lossless is not a ‘one-way’ label. Lossless has taken a risk with some of their releases in past, not playing safe and always ‘dance floor friendly’, but that only had a positive impact and gained them recognition from both people in the industry and everyday fans. Lossless is for sure one of our favorite labels out there.
Ruede Hagelstein - Foxcast 17
A true Berliner, Ruede Hagelstein is an artist that’s been around for more than 15 years, and has an impressive discography including releases on Souvenir, Watergate, Keinemusik and Upon. You just to name a few. Ruede’s most recent visit to Brooklyn and his mind-blowing performance at Cityfox in early September will be a topic in the NY underground music scene for a long time. Powerful and groovy, his set was one of the highlights of techno marathon which also featured our residents Steve Graham, Joe Foxton and Gilles Wasserman on the lineup. Ruede’s Foxcast is a great representation of what you can expect to hear from him when he performs live. Tour de force by Ruede Hagelstein!
Justin Marchacos - WCP 054
After his unbelievable debut at Cityfox’s NYE party a few years ago, Justin Marchacos’ career skyrocketed. He’s now a regular at festivals and parties around the world as well as in his home base, NYC. And it’s for a reason. Justin is a super talented artist from NYC and has put a lot of hard work in in order to be where he is now. His live sets are always groovy and melodic, and they bring really a special positive vibe to the party. This mix is exclusive for Music is For Lovers platform and it’s a pure deep-melodic house heaven.
Malbetrieb - Into the Woods 2017
Nils Schilder aka Malbetrieb is a producer and DJ from Groningen in the Netherlands. His residency at the best club in Groningen - Paradigm allowed him to share decks with such names like Tennis, Mano Le Tough, and Nuno Dos Santos to name few. Malbetrieb recently started a label called 'Lines' which is set for a prosperous life according to the releases that we've heard so far. Malbetrieb’s set from Into The Woods was a truly enjoyable listening. Expect tracks from Kiani & His Legion, Nuno Dos Santos, Plastikman, Redshape…
Bicep - The Boom Room mix
Artists of the moment contender, Belfast based duo Bicep. Their debut LP on Ninja Tune hit the shelves in September and became a huge international success. A few weeks ago Bicep paid a short visit to The Boom Room radio in Amsterdam and played a 30min mix there. Shorter than you expect from a standardized one-hour mixes nowadays, but the mix is energetic and powerful and it’ll be a great ‘wake up’ or ‘get ready to go out’ mix. Turn the volume up!
MUUI - DHM #300
Usual suspect at FictionLab, MUUI is back with yet another great mix. Patrick Carrera aka MUUI has been one of the most authentic producers in the progressive house scene. The analog touch in his productions makes all the difference when listening to hundreds of new tracks that come out weekly. This mix is exclusive for Deep House Moscow. It’s a beautiful melodic dark journey that is to be expected from super talented MUUI.
Lee Burridge - BPM Festival, Portugal 2017
The godfather of ‘dreamy house’, All day I Dream boss, Lee Burridge was one of the headliners of the very first BPM Festival that took place in Portugal in September. Over the years, Lee has established a recognizable style of ‘dreamy deep house’ that has built a fanbase around the world. This mix is a perfect example of why this style of deep house has grown so much in past few years. It’s enjoyable, and groovy enough to keep you going through music marathons in an open-air setting.
Chaos in the CBD - Phonica Mix Series 40
Two brothers hailing from New Zealand and based in London, Chaos in The CBD, are well known in minimal techno circles. Their latest mix for Phonica Records’ podcast is real music gem. You can tell they dug deep into their crates for this mix, which makes it exceptional in the ocean of mixes that sound more or less the same.
Pablo Bolivar - When We Dip #26
When We Dip is a music platform that has been promoting underground electronic music for years and in collaboration with our dear friends from Ibiza Sonica Radio, every Friday they host WWD radio. One of our favorite artists, as well as a legend of the Spanish underground music scene, Pablo Bolivar paid his visit to WWD radio in September. This mix is a recording from Pablo’s set at Nitsa Club during Endless Showcase. One hour of pure dance floor magic served by Seven Villas boss, Pablo Bolivar.
